Second-hand stores
From ACT GreenGuide
This page may contain a listing of commercial organisations. Please ensure that the style of such listings conforms to the Guidelines for businesses.
Second-hand products you can buy or sell include clothes, music, books, furniture, cooking oil, concrete, metals, refrigerants and motor oil. Look under “Recycled clothing” and “Recycling services” in the yellow pages.
Op shops ('opporunity shops') are a great way to cheaply fit out a house with furniture and kitchen equipment, or to fit out a new wardrobe. A comprehensive listing of Canberra's op shops is at the Green Map. Give your old clothes, blankets, kitchen stuff to op shops (there are bins at most local shops),
As well as op shops or second-hand stores, try some of these: less-than-$100 classifieds in Tuesday’s Canberra Times; “swap shop” (exchange one item for another) listings in the Chronicle; garage sales on weekends; have a big swap with some friends; or make your old clothes into something new.
- Revolve in Mugga Lane salvages all sorts of things that people are throwing away and sell them. Open seven days a week, 8am-4:45pm; phone Mugga Lane Revolve on 6295 7014.
- Canberra has periodic Second Hand Sundays where you can leave stuff you don’t want out on the nature strip and maybe someone else will take a fancy to it and take it home to live with them for awhile. Contact 6207 5370 for information bout regular dates.
- You can buy second hand books, clothing and music from stalls on the ANU campus on Thursdays, or at Gorman House markets (Ainslie Ave) on Saturdays.
- There are also a lot of good second hand bookshops in Fyshwick, and a few op-shops
